PageRank – The Key to the Success of Google Web quest

Web hunt emerged in 1990s when it become evident that the world wide web is huge and there are millions of websites. If you wanted to find something you could try to browse one of the web directories or you could use one of the hunt engines ready at that time. At the starting the results of hunt engines were quite useful. Things changed when people found out how to trick them and get top positions in hunt results without allowable content.

The basic principle of indexing websites at that time was naturally to analyze content and find the most tasteless words or word phrases. It was very easy to abuse this this approach. You could stuff page with keywords you would like to rank for and manufacture them invisible by using font color the same as background color. The hunt engines understanding that the the page was categorically about your keyword. So anyone who searched for this exact keyword found your page on the top of results even if the real content was something very different. Such spam websites contributed to the situation where web hunt was approximately unusable.

At the end of 1990s one new hunt motor emerged–Google. Google was different. hunt results were relevant and on the first page you regularly got what you were finding for. This was a huge dissimilarity from other hunt engines. Google immediately attracted millions of users. What was the dissimilarity between Google and other engines like Yahoo, Altavista and many others? The dissimilarity was in the algorithm. For Google it was not enough what is the content, one of the key factors in determining the relevance of the page was how many links are pointing to it. This is the basic principle of the PageRank algorithm.

PageRank algorithm calculates for each web page a number. This estimate is calculated from the PageRank of all pages that are linking to this particular page. The more links and the higher PageRank have pages that link to it, the higher PageRank will be calculated. Of course, this estimate is only one of the parameters that are taken into catalogue when calculating relevance. This is a very simple principle but has an colossal consequence. It helps to get relevant pages. Relevant pages are those which were found by other people and they have created a link to it. This is how some web page gets reputation–by getting backlinks. And if some web page has high PageRank then it is very likely that it has some beneficial content and is popular. This is the basic principle that helps Google to furnish relevant hunt results.

Google is still the the best web hunt engine. Google continuously improves hunt algorithms to display the most relevant hunt results. Now it is very difficult to trick Google. The best way to supervene is to have ability content and as much backlinks as possible. And getting links is easier when you have ability content.
